Misinformation can lead to bad decisions and regrets. That’s why the National Institute on Drug Abuse is hosting its annual National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW) from January 23 to 29. During this week, NIDA promotes teens using science to “Shatter the Myths” about drug and alcohol use and abuse.

Pelham PACT is participating in this national health observance by providing information about drugs and alcohol to teens and adults in a variety of ways. Throughout the week, we will be posting facts and resources on our Facebook and Twitter accounts, and we are also raising awareness about Pelham-specific data on coffee sleeves that will be handed out at several local Pelham cafes during the week: Bakery at Four Corners, J Café, Lenny’s Bagels, Simply Sweetz, Provisions Bake Shop, and Rolling Steam at the Metro-North Train Station. PACT thanks these businesses for partnering in this effort.

For example, did you know…

  • Regular marijuana use by young people can have long-lasting negative impacts on the structure and function of their brains. Research shows that those who used marijuana heavily in their teens and through adulthood had a significant drop in IQ. (National Institute on Drug Abuse)
  • Compared to teens who have five to seven family dinners per week, those who have fewer than three family dinners per week are twice as likely to say they expect to try drugs in the future, including marijuana and prescription drugs without a prescription (17% vs. 8%). (National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse)
  • Thirty-one percent of high school seniors reported at least one episode of binge drinking within the past two weeks. (Talk 2 Prevent)

Visit our Get the Facts page to learn more information about drug and alcohol use, and how you can talk to the teenagers in your life about making safe and healthy decisions. We’re passionate about Shattering the Myths about drug & alcohol use and here are some reasons why.
