The week of February 13, Pelham studentsPrevention Needs Assessment Survey in grades 8, 10, and 12 will take part in a voluntary and anonymous youth survey. The survey being used is the Prevention Needs Assessment Survey (PNA) and it is designed to measure alcohol, tobacco, and drug use; the factors that place students at risk for problem behaviors; and the factors that protect students from problem behaviors. Over the years, this survey has been refined and the latest version of the PNA Survey has been specifically designed to meet the needs of prevention programs in the State of New York. This survey, administered every two years, was last administered in 2015.

Students will take the survey digitally during one class period this week, via a private online portal. Bach Harrison L.L.C.  (116 S 500 E, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84102), a nationally known research firm, will collect and analyze the data, and all results from the study will be presented only in group summary form, like many opinion polls. Surveys are completely anonymous. No one in the schools will ever see the surveys.

The Prevention Needs Assessment Survey is funded through the Drug Free Communities (DFC) federal grant received in 2008 by the Pelham PACT Coalition, a community-based substance abuse prevention coalition. The goal of Pelham PACT is to encourage Pelham’s youth to make healthy, safe, and substance free choices. The purpose of the PNA Survey is to gather the information needed to plan important prevention and intervention programs to combat such problems as alcohol and other drug use and violence in our schools and communities. It will also help us judge the effectiveness of our current prevention and intervention efforts. The Pelham School District is an active partner with PACT and supportive of its work in the community. Thanks to everyone who supports this vital initiative of Pelham PACT!
